After College I began working a news station in the city where I went to college called 44News. 44 is a CBS and FOX affiliate located in Evansville, Indiana and currently owned by Allen Media Corporation. I started there as a News Producer stacking shows and writing stories for their morning newscasts. After about two months in that position a position in creative services opened up. An opening like that doesn’t happen often so I jumped at the opportunity and joined the creative services team as a multimedia producer.
Using my knowledge of HTML and CSS I created a basic layout of how the system would work. It would display everyone’s picture in the big section and have the time and time in the top right section. Then a section of company memos and calendar dates. With the extra room at the bottom I decided to put in an area for branding that could occasionally be changed based on current events.
My specific role in the department was creating promos, closed captioning local programming, creating anything the station needs in terms of graphic design, and most importantly I was in charge of creating all the templates for on-air graphics. At 44, I used Ross Xpression Studio to create said on-air graphics. While I was there, I learned how to go from concept to fully functioning graphic. Using Xpression’s Node based visual logic system and Microsoft Visual Basic Scripting I utilized every feature Xpression has available to create graphics that pushed the boundaries of what the software can do.
Some of the on-air graphics I’ve made can be seen below.
